We're especially fond of 'vintage' boilers from 20+ years ago due to their simplistic workings and better reliability.

Nest is better in pretty much every aspect. It's undoubtedly the easiest system to program and is more intelligent than Hive. Hive is more traditional and needs manual operation, however, Nest learns your preferences and configures its own schedule.
Nest can be fitted to pretty much all gas central heating boilers. With the exception of a rare Bosch boiler from 20+ years ago, we haven't found a system where we couldn't get it working.
From our experience, yes, it will almost certainly save money on energy bills. It only switches the boiler on when required and automatically switches off when you go out.

It was serviced within an hour and is now working like clock work, and so are all of my radiators as he diligently checked them all and sorted out the one's that weren't warming up properly. He's given me tips for kick starting any that don't heat up properly in the future and reminded me which valves to use when the boiler loses it's pressure.
